On October 25th, 2016 the Joomla team issued a security release for the 3.x series of Joomla. Joomla 3.6.4 fixes a high-severity security vulnerability that can allow remote users to create new accounts, modify existing accounts, and elevate their privileges to that of a Super Administrator on any Joomla site not patched.

These issues combined potentially give attackers enough power to get complete control of your Joomla website. The affected Joomla versions are from 3.4.4 through 3.6.3.

Joomla Security Release

Joomla 3.6.4 has been released to fix a critical security flaw in all Joomla versions from Joomla 3.4.4 to Joomla 3.6.3 - this could lead to your site being compromised if you don't upgrade asap

This is "not just another update" this is a critical security update for a known security vulnerability that can be exploited easily.

The two security issues this release fixes are:

  1. Inadequate checks allows for users to register on a site when registration has been disabled.
  2. Incorrect use of unfiltered data allows for users to register on a site with elevated privileges.
